I’ve attended some fantastic themed events. I’ve also seen themed events that have left a lot to be desired. So should you consider theming your next event? The answers yes but choose your event wisely. Not every type of event needs a theme.
While some of your events because of their subject matter already have a theme, the way in which you present it can take many forms. Your event theming can be very elaborate, involving a wide range of different elements, or it can be much simpler affair. Think of the unusual. Clever themes can be used to spark discussion amongst your guests and can leave a lasting impression. Once agreed, all elements of the event must then fit the theme in a relevant and consistent way – with perhaps the odd ‘wow’ too! Literally, anything can be used as an event theme – colours, numbers, historical events, exercise, fashions, statements, campaigns, legislation, films, countries, games and so forth. So what aspects of your event can be themed?
- The venue – inside and outside
- Infrastructure – marquees, staging, barriers
- Catering – food, drinks, table settings, serving staff
- Audio Visual – sound, lighting
- Special Effects – lasers, fireworks
- Speakers / entertainment / artistes
- Decoration, props, scenery, flowers, colours (colours can affect the mood)
- Sounds / music
- All forms of communication – invites, web sites, posters,
- Transport
- Dress code
- Gifts and favours
- Event staff – male / female / age / uniform / look
How much you let the theme dictate your event design will ultimately be a factor of how much money you have to spend and on how creative you are in finding alternative solutions to some of the more costly theming elements. There are a number of companies that specialise in theming events. If you have the budget then a call to them may be a good idea.
