The Event Expert: Bespoke Event Management Training Course
Commonwealth War Graves Commission
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission is responsible for the commemoration of almost 1,700,000 members of the commonwealth forces who gave their lives in the two world wars. The war graves and memorials are found around the world in some 150 countries. 2014 saw the beginning of five years of commemorative events marking 100 years since the start of the First World War. With such an important few years ahead of them the Commissions events team wanted to make sure that their events and any partner events, often led by the Department for Media, Culture and Sport were of the highest quality. I got a call.
So how did I help?
The Commission’s events are typically ceremonial, contain a high percentage of visiting guests and dignitaries and are based at key memorials or cemeteries. All of these factors presented their own problems. Mindful of these facts I set about devising a three day course covering such subjects as event design, project planning, venue evaluation, security, event promotion, traffic management (none of the sites in question were ever set up for large numbers of visitors), understanding protocols and creating and implementing venue specific emergency plans….to name but a few: the ‘how to’ of successful major event planning.
We agreed it was best to run the course from the Commissions French offices in Arras. Arras is in the heart of what was the front line. This meant that part of the course could include visits to key event sites and ‘on the spot’ event venue evaluations. Members of the Arras team were joined by colleagues from the UK and Ypres in Belgium. We covered a lot of ground, learnt a lot together and devised some new plans and events! The team at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission are now ready to face these rather important next few years with renewed confidence and energy.
